Support circuits to feed the sensor is included, and measurement is ratiometric – the dual-stage programmable gain amplifier can accommodate sensors from 1mV/V up to 500mV/V (500Ω to 60kΩ).
An on-chip current source also allows sensors including Pt100 platinum resistance and diode-type thermometers to be read, and an on-chip temperature sensor is included.
Outputs can be through SPI (10MHz), I2C (standard, fast and high-speed) or a I2C-derived 100kHz one-wire format branded ‘OWI’ by Renesas.
OWI data can be sent back through a 4mA to 20mA current-loop running anywhere between 7V and 48V using an external npn modulation transistor. Working with an external JFT, internal circuitry is provided to derive a 5V power rail for the chip from the current loop.
There is also an analogue output – not derived directly from the input signal, but from the digital output of the correction processor reconstituted through a 16bit ADC. Absolute (0 -10V) and ratiometric voltage, current-loop, or interrupt analogue outputs are supported.
Chip operation is in one of three basic modes
Sleep mode is recommended for sensors with purely digital output. Idle state is automatically entered after command execution for minimum current consumption, while the interface remains listening to accepts commands.
It wakes after receiving a valid command, executes, provides the results at the digital interface, and returns to idle after the data fetch. Repeated data fetch is not supported, nor is analogue outpt.
Command mode is most appropriate for evaluation, test, and calibration. All commands are available, both digital and analog outputs are supported, and all functions are available. Re-occurring and continuous digital interaction are available.
Cyclic mode is autonomous, with sensor measurements repeated automatically and processed into output updates (digital or analogue or both). This mode is recommended for analogue output applications. Measurement rate (hence output update rate) is configurable.
Operation is over 2.7V to 5.5V (7V to 48V with the external JFET) and -40°C to 125°C.
Packaging is die-on-wafer or 4 x 4mm QFN with wettable flanks for re-flow inspection.
Applications are foreseen in pressure, flow, and level sensing, process automation, factory automation, white goods, air conditioning, weighing scales, blood pressure monitoring and health monitors
